Charthouse's Favorite Summer Movies

Summer. The days are long, the sun is hot, and there's a sense of freedom in the air. After a day in the sun, there is nothing I love more than watching a movie with friends or family to end the day. The popcorn tastes better. The beverage of your choice is more refreshing. The spot on the couch shapes to your body in an inescapable way. All in all, summer movies just hit differently.

It doesn't matter if the movie came out during the summer or takes place during summer; the summer movie is the movie you want to enjoy with friends while slightly sunburned. And we, at Charthouse, have compiled a list of some of our favorite summer movies.

Jaws: To start off the list let’s talk about the first ever summer blockbuster, Jaws. Spielberg's masterful storytelling in "Jaws" remains a testament to the power of cinema to elicit genuine emotions and create lasting memories. From the music, to the adventure, all in all it’s a perfect summer movie.

If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." There's nothing better than enjoying an adventure with friends, especially a movie that celebrates the bonds of friendship and the joy of embracing life's spontaneous moments.

Grosse Pointe Blank: Action. Romance. Existential Musings. With its clever blend of humor and suspense, the movie explores themes of identity, second chances, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. Hunt For The Wilderpeople. Let's take a moment to step out of the '70s, '80s, and '90s and delve into one of our more modern favorite movies, "Hunt for the Wilderpeople." As one of Taika Waititi's earlier films, it takes us on an unforgettable summer adventure through the stunning wilderness of New Zealand. With its delightful mix of humor, heart, and breathtaking landscapes, the film beautifully captures the essence of unlikely friendships and the transformative power of embracing one's true nature. "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" is a cinematic gem that reminds us of the thrilling and transformative experiences that summer can bring.

Endless Summer: If we're discussing a movie that perfectly captures the essence of summer, then let’s talk about a movie that is summer in 90 minutes. Endless Summer follows two surfers as they travel the world in search of the ultimate wave, showcasing the beauty of different surf spots and introducing viewers to the global surfing community. With its breathtaking cinematography and relaxed atmosphere, "Endless Summer" has become an iconic symbol of the carefree spirit and infinite opportunities that summer brings to surfers and adventurers worldwide.

Adventureland: We've all had summer jobs, but those of us who have experienced a transformative one share a common bond. "Adventureland" follows James Brennan, a relatable character navigating the uncertain post-college phase, and beautifully captures the bittersweet essence of those formative years. It serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power and the unforgettable memories that can be found in the most unexpected places, resonating with those of us who have been fortunate enough to embark on such a journey.

The Seven Year Itch: Since its release in 1955, Billy Wilder's "The Seven Year Itch" has told a tale of temptation and Marilyn Monroe. Even though this film has taught us that an overactive imagination certainly doesn't help with a strained marriage, its blend of humor and introspection, "The Seven Year Itch" continues to resonate and remain relevant, offering insights into the complexities of relationships that endure even to this day.

The Thing: The freezing cold doesn't take away from the summer feeling. While I could delve into how "The Thing" explores the depths of human nature, touching on themes of isolation, survival, and the fragility of trust, ultimately, it remains an arctic blast of fun and horror that can be enjoyed with friends, even on the hottest day.

Hot Fuzz: With its witty dialogue, clever references, and exhilarating chase sequences, "Hot Fuzz" keeps the audience entertained and engaged from start to finish. It's a summer movie that delivers the perfect blend of laughs, thrills, and unexpected twists, making it a must-watch for those seeking an unforgettable cinematic experience.
