The Line Part 2: Above

In the last article, we delved into the concept of "the line" and explored the world of below the line positions. As a quick recap, below the line positions are typically characterized by their technical nature and variable pay structures, reflecting the specialized skills and expertise required for these roles. However, in this article, we are set to embark on an exciting journey into the captivating realm of above the line positions – the creative powerhouses that infuse films with their artistic vision, unique flair, and immense creative contributions.

Above the line positions encompass a diverse range of roles that are integral to the creative direction and artistic expression of a film. These positions are often associated with a flare rate-based compensation structure, reflecting the creative contributions and decision-making responsibilities of those involved. While technical expertise certainly plays a role, the emphasis is on the imaginative and visionary aspects of filmmaking.

Director:
We'll start with the obvious: Spielberg, Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Gerwig, Scorsese. Whether you're a cinephile or a casual moviegoer, everyone recognizes the importance of "the director." They are the visionary leaders who breathe life into the script. Directors oversee and guide every creative aspect of the film, from the actors' performances to the visual aesthetics and storytelling techniques. They work closely with the production team, collaborating with the cinematographer, production designer, and other key members to translate their artistic vision onto the screen. Making critical decisions about shot composition, camera angles, pacing, and overall tone, directors ensure that the film aligns with their creative vision. With their artistic sensibility and storytelling prowess, directors wield the power to shape the narrative and evoke emotional responses from the audience, making them indispensable to the success of a film.

Our Director for FTC, Nate Allison

Our Executive Producer for FTC, Tommy Anderson.

Producer:
I could write an article on the different types of producers – executive, associate, co, and line producers. But at its core, producers are the driving force behind the film, responsible for overseeing all aspects of its production. They shape the creative vision, secure financing, assemble the team, and manage the budget. Producers collaborate closely with the director, ensuring that the project stays on track and aligns with the intended vision. They negotiate deals, acquire necessary permits and clearances, and handle legal and logistical matters. Their expertise in balancing creative aspirations with financial realities makes them instrumental in navigating the complex world of filmmaking. Ultimately, producers are the architects of a film's journey, bringing together various elements to create a cohesive and successful cinematic experience.

Casting Director:

A casting directors find the perfect actor and actress to bring the characters to life. They work closely with the director and producers to understand the vision and requirements of each role. Casting directors search for talented actors through auditions, talent agencies, and other resources. They review audition tapes, conduct in-person auditions, and carefully evaluate the suitability of each actor for the desired role. Casting directors also collaborate with the director to make final casting decisions, ensuring that the chosen actors have the right chemistry and fit the overall ensemble. Their expertise in understanding the nuances of characters and their ability to identify talent contribute significantly to the success and authenticity of a film's performances. A skilled casting director has a keen eye for talent, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of the script and characters, making them essential in creating a strong and compelling cast for a film.

For Charthouse as a smaller independent production company, we have actually all had to play the part of Casting Director. So in place of another photo of us, here is a picture of Tommy’s dog Koda.

Principal Cast:

These talented actors portray the main characters, who drive the narrative and engage us throughout the film. With their impressive acting skills and ability to evoke emotions, they give depth and authenticity to their characters. The principal cast members are often experienced professionals or emerging talents, chosen for their ability to captivate viewers with their performances. They create on-screen chemistry and dynamic interactions, shaping the relationships and conflicts that unfold in the story. The principal cast represents the heart of the film, embodying the characters we invest in and rooting for their journeys. Their talent and commitment are vital in conveying the story's essence and leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

Screenwriter:

The screenwriter is the creative mastermind behind the story that unfolds on the screen. They are the architects of the narrative, crafting compelling characters, engaging dialogue, and gripping plotlines. With their imaginative minds and storytelling prowess, screenwriters translate ideas into a written script, breathing life into the story and setting the foundation for the entire film. They work closely with the director and other key members of the production team, collaborating to ensure that the screenplay aligns with the intended vision. Screenwriters possess a keen understanding of structure, pacing, and character development, skillfully weaving together elements that captivate and resonate with audiences. Through their words, they transport viewers to different worlds, explore diverse themes, and elicit a range of emotions. The screenwriter's creativity and ability to craft compelling narratives are essential in shaping the foundation of a successful film.

As a side note I also wrote about how the screenwriter is undervalued and about the current writer strike.
